Practising the “why leave hospitality?” interview question
German interviewers ask this early. A bitter rant about bad managers closes doors. A vague “I want a new challenge” sounds rehearsed.
A three-part answer that works
- Respect the past — name one skill hospitality gave you that you still value.
- Name the mismatch — hours, physical strain, or the desire for daytime structure — pick one honest reason.
- Point forward — connect that reason to the duties in this office role.
Example shape: “Five years on the floor taught me to stay calm when plans collapse. I am ready for daytime hours and deeper follow-through on one process, which is why the customer-operations focus in your posting fits.”
What to avoid
Do not trash tips, tourists, or your last Küchenchef. Do not pretend you never liked guest work if your CV shows pride in service awards — interviewers notice the contradiction.
Rehearse out loud
Written answers flatten under follow-ups. Two live rehearsals in our Interview Rehearsal consultation are designed for exactly this question and the ones that come after it.
